News about Apple's new policy on apps with sexual content began to surface last week. It is now reported that 5000 apps with sexual content have been removed from the iTunes store.

The report of 5000 apps came from AppShopper.com, which reported 4000 apps had been removed on Feb 18th, with more getting the axe over the weekend. They reported that on avg, the apps store loses about 100 apps a day. Since the change in Apple app rules regarded sexual content, that number has increased greatly, and the total amount of removed apps is about 3% of the entire App Store.

Developer ChilliFresh, was one of the first to release information, as their app Wobble was removed from the app store after selling 970,000 copies. He reported after talking to Apple that these were the new rules surrounding sexual content:
I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules:
    • No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)
    • No images of men in bikinis! (I didn't ask about Ice Skating tights for men)
    • No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)
    • No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs
    • No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex - all banned
    • Nothing that can be sexually arousing!!
    • No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but ...)
These 'rules' have not been confirmed by Apple, but looking at the removed apps over the past week these rules or some variation of them seems to be the case.

I worry about moves like this. This censorship will turn a lot of people off from Apple. It also opens the market more for Jailbreaking and other not approved app stores that already exisit. Perhaps if they had a catagory just for apps of this nature, and they would therefore not clutter up other catagories on the App Store? Also playing favorites by allowing Playboy to stay, is not gonna win any popularity contests.

    Let the discussion begin

Apperently 1Password has been around for the iPhone and OSX already. This is the first I have heard of it, but am quite excited about it for my phone. That is one of my beefs with the iPhone, I can't really put password saving in it. And if I could I wouldn't really want to incase I lost my phone. Seems to be a great solution. I am gonna get it now and will report how it works in the Forum.

Found this video at Wired today showing how they plan to use the iPad to deleiver their great magazine. I reported Wired's plans earlier this week, but thought this video was worth the second post.

Flurry, a website that reports on the smartphone industry has noticed a large increase in app development.

Developers integrating Flurry analytics into iPhone OS applications in January increased by nearly three times over December. This represents the single largest spike in Flurry history, with over 1,600 new iPhone OS application starts for January. Historically, Flurry has measured surges in new application starts within its system in anticipation of new device launches, including for the Motorola Droid and iPhone 3GS. As such, we hypothesize that excitement generated by Apple's iPad event in January is driving this growth. For developers who get a jump on customizing their applications for the iPad, there may be an opportunity to stand out early on, and earn more downloads.

"The MacBU officials also hinted at an iPad version of Office for Mac. Developers are said to be considering several options such as a full version, lite version, and more. From the features page in Apple's iPad site:

"The iBooks app is a great new way to read and buy books. Download the free app from the App Store and buy everything from classics to best sellers from the built-in iBookstore. Once you’ve bought a book, it’s displayed on your Bookshelf. Just tap it to start reading. The high-resolution, LED-backlit screen displays everything in sharp, rich color, so it’s easy to read, even in low light."

This really isn't new information, as the site has always had this posted. But people have been assuming its part of the whole package. It is free, and the reason Apple is thought to be handling iBooks this way, is to allow it to be updated more often. Otherwise the iBook app would only be able to be updated with new OS releases.

Discuss further in the forums, or comment here.
